The Deptford X Pop-up was a mobile festival hub designed for the 2021 edition of Deptford X Festival, which adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic by relocating outdoors. Conceived as both a piece of functional furniture and a gathering point, the installation supported a safe, vibrant festival experience across Deptford's public spaces.
Inspired by the festival's "X" motif, the hub used bold colours and graphic patterns to draw people in. It served as a moving point of contact: a space for visitors to gather information, sit, perform, and meet one another across the festival days.
The piece was designed for versatility. Its wheels allowed it to be repositioned across the festival site, and its two-sided form meant it could be used by people on either side. Outside the festival, the same structure folded back into use as office furniture, extending the life of the commission beyond the event itself.
A limited edition risograph poster accompanied the installation. Featuring an image of the hub alongside the message "Always Be Kind", the poster was distributed for free on one day of the festival, offered as a small gesture of generosity and community spirit. It became both a keepsake for visitors and a small extension of the festival's values into the wider city.
