James Sinclair Point

James Sinclair Point was a 22 storey tower block, which overlooked Queens Market. The block contained 254 flats and was part of a significant redevelopment by the council of Queens Market, which began in 1967. The building had an adjacent multi-story car park. On its completion, it was the largest residential block in Western Europe.  It was featured in the opening credits of 'In Sickness and in Health.'

According to architect Sam Webb, who used to attend tenants' meetings in 1985, Tenants of James Sinclair Point would talk about the mad axeman who roamed the building's corridors. Webb wrote in the Architect Journal:

"One bad tenant in a 22-storey tower block can, and will, cause misery for everyone who lives there, often making them prisoners in their own home. When I used to attend tenants' meetings in 1985 at James Sinclair Point, a huge multi-storey block straddling Upton Park Market near West Ham Football Ground, I thought the TA members were exaggerating when they told me about the 'mad axeman' roaming the long corridors. It was no exaggeration."

Due to structural issues, James Sinclair Point was demolished in late 1993.
